8th Graders Create LUNAR PHASES

Mrs. Shelley Hale recently used Oreos to create a fun activity AND teach the lunar phases. Students broke apart the oreos and created all eight phases of the moon. It was a fun and educational activity. Students ate the oreos after class.

HISD and ACE Host Scholastic Book Fair Family Night

Over 148 parents and students attended our Book Fair Family Night on Tuesday, February 7, 2017. The Book Fair was hosted in the Hamilton Junior High Library. Our AWE and HJH ACE Programs sponsored literacy and provided tickets to ACE students to purchase books. The ACE Programs also served S'mores to fit the theme of the book fair. Thanks to all of our volunteers, ACE staff, teachers, and parents who made this event a success. Proceeds from the book fair help all HISD libraries. Mrs. Karen Krueger is the HISD Librarian.

HJH 6th Graders Study Central Tendencies

Mr. Lackey's 6th grade math students studied central tendencies this week. Students are learning about mean, mode, median, and range. They created their own real-life problems and found all of the central tendencies of their problems. Students worked collaboratively in groups for these activities.

Basketball Teams Place in Tournaments

Several HJH Basketball Teams placed in basketball tournaments in Crawford and also in Hamilton recently. Our 8th grade girls won the Crawford Tournament. Our 7th grade boys placed 3rd in the Hamilton Tournament and our 8th grade boys placed 2nd in the Hamilton Tournament.

HJH 8th Graders Share Reading with AWE

Mrs. Henkes' 8th grade classes have recently shared time with students at Ann Whitney Elementary. 8th grade students have read with and assisted AWE students with reading and AR testing. Many books and smiles were shared.

HJH Students Compete in Local Spelling Bee

Hamilton ISD recently hosted our Local Spelling Bee on February 2, 2017. Several HJH students competed for places in our County Bee on February 9, 2017. The event was held in the Chandler Craig Auditorium. Those students advancing to the next level were: Laurel Ann Elkins, Kiara Lauricio, Mia Barrett, and Cody Tawater.

HJH Students Watch Inauguration

HJH students were allowed to leave class to view the inauguration of the President. The live event was shown in the HJH Library. Thanks to Mrs. Betsy Killian for clearing the library for this event.

Weather Systems

Our 8th grade students recently studied weather systems in science. Students learned about weather fronts with cold and hot water experiments. Mrs. Shelley Hale teaches 8th grade science.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day @ HJH

Today HJH students were encountered with signs on our restrooms and water fountains that read "No Brunettes." In the cafeteria at break, brunettes were only allowed to sit at certain tables. There were so many brunettes, that many had to stand. Students felt very uncomfortable. We learned about discrimination, segregation, and how Dr. King worked as a civil rights leader to bring about peaceful change in the 1960's.

Ugly Sweater Contest in December

Hamilton Junior High enjoyed our annual Ugly Sweater Contest in the HJH Library. Mrs. Killian provided runway music as each participant walked through the library. All HJH students participated and voted online for their three favorite contestants. Winning the competition was Mrs. McNeely with Asa Hamilton and Ashley Powers as runners-up. Thanks to all of the participants.
